Ross Taylor is set to make a stunning comeback. After retiring in 2022, he's set to represent the Samoan national team.
Taylor's decision was deeply personal. He was persuaded after a phone call with his ailing mother, Lote, who encouraged him to "Just do it."
The idea was hatched by the Samoan team, who qualified for the T20 World Cup. A friend made the initial phone call, revealing their plan to get Taylor on the team.
Taylor was a "five per cent chance" at first. But in minutes, he changed his mind, and his mother's blessing made it 100 per cent.
Taylor qualifies for Samoa through his mother. He grew up speaking Samoan and now sees this as an opportunity to give back to his heritage.
At 41, Taylor will also be a mentor. He hopes to pass on his knowledge to the young Samoan players, some of whom were born after his career began.
Samoa faces a difficult challenge, grouped with Oman and Papua New Guinea. Taylor knows they have the "hardest draw" but remains confident.
Taylor isn't the only one coming back. Other New Zealand players are also rejoining the squad to bolster their chances, like Sean Solia
Taylor is inspired by other players over 40 still excelling in T20 cricket. He hopes his experience will make up for any loss of speed.
This isn't just about the upcoming World Cup. Taylor hopes his involvement will help grow the game in Samoa and provide experience for future tournaments.
