Maharashtra will observe Classic Marathi Language Week (Oct 3–9) to celebrate Marathi’s rich legacy, following its recent recognition as a Classical Language.
Last year, the Centre recognized Marathi as a classical language.
To honor this, the state has declared Oct 3 as Classical Marathi Language Day.
From October 3 to 9, Maharashtra will host events in cities like Mumbai, Nagpur, and Amravati. These will include literary, cultural, and dialogue-based activities.
On October 6, at Vanamati Hall in Nagpur's Gorepeth, there will be an event titled 'Majhya Marathicha Tila' showcasing recitations of Marathi poetry.
Engage young people with the rich classical heritage of Marathi, highlight the language's cultural and literary significance, and encourage academic study and research in Marathi.
The central government recognized Marathi as a classical language on October 4, 2024. A state resolution on October 14 designated October 3 as Classical Marathi Day, with a week set for celebrations.
The Union Cabinet declared Marathi, Bengali, Assamese, Pali, and Prakrit as classical languages, bringing the total to eleven in India.
A language earns classical status by having a documented history of 1,500–2,000 years and a distinct literary tradition with ancient texts not derived from other languages.
