Classic Marathi Language Week Begins!

Maharashtra will observe Classic Marathi Language Week (Oct 3–9) to celebrate Marathi’s rich legacy, following its recent recognition as a Classical Language.

Why this week?

Last year, the Centre recognized Marathi as a classical language.
To honor this, the state has declared Oct 3 as Classical Marathi Language Day.

What’s happening?

From October 3 to 9, Maharashtra will host events in cities like Mumbai, Nagpur, and Amravati. These will include literary, cultural, and dialogue-based activities.

In Nagpur

On October 6, at Vanamati Hall in Nagpur's Gorepeth, there will be an event titled 'Majhya Marathicha Tila' showcasing recitations of Marathi poetry.

Goals & vision

Engage young people with the rich classical heritage of Marathi, highlight the language's cultural and literary significance, and encourage academic study and research in Marathi.

Recognition timeline

The central government recognized Marathi as a classical language on October 4, 2024. A state resolution on October 14 designated October 3 as Classical Marathi Day, with a week set for celebrations.

India Now Has 11 Classical Languages

The Union Cabinet declared Marathi, Bengali, Assamese, Pali, and Prakrit as classical languages, bringing the total to eleven in India.

Criteria for Classical Language Status

A language earns classical status by having a documented history of 1,500–2,000 years and a distinct literary tradition with ancient texts not derived from other languages.
