Remembering Dr. Manmohan Singh: India’s Economic Architect

Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s 13th Prime Minister, is famed for modernizing India’s economy through key reforms. He transformed the nation into a global economic contender while promoting growth and stability.

Dr. Manmohan Singh was born to Gurmukh Singh Kohli and Amrit Kaur on 26 September 1932, in Gah, Punjab, British India, now in Pakistan.

After Partition, his family moved to Haldwani and then Amritsar, where he studied at Hindu College. He earned top honours in Economics at Panjab University and Cambridge’s St John’s College.

In 1972, He became the Chief Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Finance and later, in 1991 P.V. Narasimha Rao chose him as a Finance Minister during the economic crisis.

During his tenure as Finance Minister, Singh introduced liberalization, ended License Raj, and opened India’s economy to global trade. That earned him the title of ‘Architect of Modern India’s Economy’

From 2004 to 2014 he served two terms as Prime Minister. Focused on growth, social welfare, foreign diplomacy, and national stability. In his tenure as PM India signed the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement.

Dr. Manmohan Singh led economic liberalization, global integration, and social schemes like MGNREGA, strengthening India’s international standing, with 2007 marking a 9% GDP growth, the second fastest globally.
