World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern

2025 Theme: #PostForPeople: Local Service, Global Reach

Over one-third of people offline and half of businesses not trading offline, post-offices often the only public access point in remote areas.

World Post Day highlights the postal sector’s role in daily life and its contribution to social and economic development.

The Indian postal system traces its roots to 1766 when Warren Hastings established the "Company Mail" under the East India Company.

Dalhousie modernized the service, introducing uniform rates and the Post Office Act, 1854, which laid the foundation for the organized postal service we see today.

India Post grew rapidly after 1947, expanding from 23,000 to over 155,000 post offices by 2016, reaching even the most remote rural areas.

The department has continuously evolved, introducing services like Speed Post in 1986 and implementing initiatives like Project Arrow (2008) to improve efficiency and service quality.

India Post, with the world’s largest network, supports communication, financial inclusion, and social services. Adapted digitally via e-post and Payments Bank, it connects urban and rural India for 150+ years.
