Humans didn’t appear all of a sudden. We evolved slowly over millions of years from apelike ancestors. About 7 million years ago, early ancestors of humans and apes started to live different lives, walking on two legs instead of four.
Australopithecus was one of the first to walk on two legs all the time, living in Africa over 4 million years ago.
Homo habilis, called ‘handy man,’ learned to make simple stone tools around 2.3 million years ago.
Homo erectus was the first to use fire and travel far from Africa, living in different parts of the world about 2 million years ago.
Neanderthals and Denisovans were close relatives who lived in Europe and Asia. They sometimes had children with early modern humans.
Our species, Homo sapiens, appeared about 300,000 years ago with bigger brains and the ability to think and speak.
We spread across the globe, creating art, tools, farming, and building communities everywhere.
Even today, humans keep changing and growing, learning new things and shaping the future.
