New challenges on Familiar turf For CM

New challenges on Familiar turf For CM

Mumbai: After being in the chair for three years, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has shown maturity in politics. However, the winter session of the State Legislature may not be easy for him to tackle. The Opposition has regained confidence with the current political scenario in Gujarat and it has more issues to corner the government with. Besides, the Shiv Sena is also in a position to corner the government on the issue of farmers’ loan waiver scheme “fiasco”.

The winter session begins in Nagpur from Monday and will go on for two weeks. In the past, the CM has always been aggressive over issues raised by the Opposition. This time, the strategy may not work as the Sena is aligning with the Opposition over issues like the farm loan waiver, farmers’ deaths due to pesticides, BT seeds and pink bollworm attack on cotton crops.

The government will table 13 bills in both Houses, besides 11 ordinances.

This year, the monsoon was good and agriculture production was good, but farmers are not happy as there is no market for products. Even after announcement of the farm loan waiver, suicides of farmers have not stopped. The farmers are irritated by the online loan waiver form and its conditions.

Regarding purchase of tur, the government will have to face criticism over purchase and payment of bills to farmers. Ahead of the session, the BJP received a boost when its candidate won a by-poll to the Legislative Council with cross-voting indicating a crack in Opposition ranks.

Prasad Lad got 25 additional votes. He received 9 unexpected votes and that might be from Congress and NCP, but both parties are not willing to accept the truth. The NCP has started a Halla Bol agitation and is covering Marathwada and Vidarbha. On the second day of the session, the agitation will end with a big rally at Nagpur. Sharad Pawar is going to lead the rally and it will boost the NCP in its efforts to corner the government.
