Shaheen Bagh 2.0 protests prevented by Delhi Police

Anti-CAA protestors were planning to resume the protests on June 3 at Shaheen Bagh and Jamia area in Delhi. Massive protests were to breakout outside Jamia University gates and inside Shaheen Bagh where women and their children would have gathered in huge numbers. Due to the timely tip-off, Delhi police could take action and stopped the Anti-CAA and NRC protestors.

The campaign’s title was ‘Sab Yaad Rakha Jaega’, wherein people were ready to hit the streets. Protests were being planned since 4-5 days, and through social media applications like Twitter and WhatsApp, the word was circulated around the citizens.

The agenda was to gather on the streets with the maximum public, which wouldn’t allow Delhi police to prevent the protests. Several Twitter accounts and WhatsApp groups we’re made to spread the word and get maximum people on board. Few physical meetings were hosted to plan the protests; these meetings took place in few homes at Shaheen Bagh.

As many as 200 organisations reached out to women, as a call for protests. According to reports, these organisations have links with CPI and CPM and believed to have a leftist ideology.

The focus of the protests was not only on Anti-CAA and Jamia violence but also to raise an issue against the arrests of Meeran Haider, Asif Iqbal Tanha and Safoora Zargar and JNU students Sharjeel Iman, Ishrat Jehan, Khalid Saifi and Shifa-Ur-Rehman.

Protesters planned on blocking the roads with tents, but the Delhi Police were aware of the plan. The cops deployed security officials in Shaheen Bagh and Jamia University areas to prevent any protests. Delhi police also installed temporary tents and covered all the regions around Shaheen Bagh and Jamia University.

Several protests against CAA and JNU violence began in mid-December. The sites like Shaheen Bagh and outside Jamia University were cleared on March 14, due to the lockdown triggered by coronavirus outbreak.
