Pune-Mumbai trains: Railways wait for government’s approval to resume service
Pune: The Pune railway division is waiting for the approval of the state government to resume the train services between Pune-Mumbai.
Renu Sharma, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Pune Railway division on Thursday said, “Trains between Pune and Mumbai were halted amid the rising cases of the novel coronavirus. The state government is yet to speak to the railway authorities about the resumption of train services between two cities.”
She also informed that said freight and parcel trains are running during the COVID-19 lockdown period.
Meanwhile, daily commuters of Pune and Mumbai are demanding to resume the train service between the two metro cities. The passengers regularly travelling on the Pune-Mumbai section have expressed the need for urgent resumption of trains with preventive measures to curb the spread of the novel virus will be taken care off.
The train service has been suspended from the last five months due to the spread of COVID-19 in the state. Also, no local trains are plying from Pune to Lonavla. Currently, only the Pune-Danapur Express is operating directly from Pune with just seven other trains pass through the city daily.
The Indian Railways has decided to hold off the recommencing of local as well as express train services in the city for the general public, even as other restrictions imposed on the lockdown are being lifted gradually.
