Pune: A 40-year-old IT engineer hunting for the job opportunity in foreign countries was duped of Rs 20 lakh over the past year in online fraud.

A complaint in the matter was lodged at Alankar Police Station by Madhav Kenajle a resident of Kothrud area. Unidentified callers duped Kenjle for Rs 20.64 lakh after promising to bag the job in Europe, USA or other companies within the country.

According to the police, Kenjale had shared his resume on a job search website. Unidentified callers acquired his resume from that website and since then the complainant received multiple calls on his mobile as well as on emails too. Under the lure of getting him a job, callers enticed him into paying Rs 20,64,777 for many reasons via online method.

The complainant who works as an engineer in the city-based IT company told police that he made the transactions from July 2019. The fraudsters promised him that the money was demanded to secure the position in the company. Police inspector Rajesh Tatkare of Alankar police station is probing the matter.

Pune Cyber Police Inspector Jayram Paygude while appealing to the people said, “Online fraud is on the rise since the lockdown is imposed. Police have appealed people not to fall for any online trap. No companies ask money to join them. People should check and verify before they click such bait link or answer any call.”
