Guru Nanak Jayanti

Also known as Gurupurab or Prakash Utsav marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji. He was founder of Sikhism and first of the ten Sikh Gurus.

Birth and Significance

Born in 1469 in Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi (Now Nankana Sahib, Pakistan), Guru Nanak Dev ji dedicated his life to spiritual enlightenment.

Message of 'Ik Onkar'

Guru Nanak Dev Ji's central teaching is 'Ik Onkar', means, there is only one god. He rejected caste discrimination, ritualism and superstitions.

Pillars of Sikhism

Guru Nanak Dev ji's philosophy can be summarised in three core principles: Naam Japna, Kirat Karni, and Vand Chakna.

Akhand Path

Celebrations typically commence two days before main Gurupurab. The ritual is called Akhand Path, a continuous 48 hour uninterrupted recitation.

Nagar Kirtan

A day before festival, grand procession called Nagar Kirtan is organised. It is led by Panj Pyare (The Five Beloved Ones).

Langar

On the day of Gurupurab, one of the most significant traditions is the Langar. It is a free community meal served to all visitors.

Prayers and Devotion

The day begins early at Amrit Vela (4-5am) with singing of Asa Di Var (morning hymns) and concludes with night prayers sessions.
