What is Brain- Eating Amoeba

Kerala is experiencing a significant increase in cases of infections due to Naegleria Fowleri, often known as the 'brain-eating' amoeba.

What is Naegleria fowleri

It’s a microscopic amoeba found in warm, fresh water that causes Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM).

Spike in Kerala

As of September 19, 2025, there are 69 confirmed infections & 19 fatalities in Kerala; Recent cases are in isolation, complicating containment efforts.

How It Spreads

Amoeba enters through nose (e.g. while swimming), thrives in warm stagnant water, cannot spread person‑to‑person.

Signs & Symptoms

Early symptoms: high fever, headache, stiff neck, vomiting; then confusion, seizures.

Incubation & Progress

Takes 1‑14 days to show symptoms. Disease progresses very fast and often fatal.

Prevention Tips

Steer clear of warm, still freshwater; ensure water tanks are cleaned or chlorinated; refrain from disturbing sediment.

Limited Treatment Options

Addressing PAM is still challenging, yet Kerala has begun incorporating miltefosine, an anti-parasitic drug, into their treatment protocol.
