100 Years Of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)

Ankur Nikam

Founded in 1925 on the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar.

The aim of the organisation was to instill good character, discipline and a strong sense of nationalism and cultural awareness in its members.

The core ideology of RSS is ‘Hindutva’, a term popularised by Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. It is a cultural and nationalistic interpretation of Hinduism.

The primary mechanism of the RSS is the daily gatherings called ‘Shakha’. Focus on physical exercise, moral and intellectual education. And head of the organisation is 'Sarsanghchalak'

The official emblem of the RSS is the Bhagwa Dhwaj (Saffron Flag). They consider that as a ‘Guru’ and offer Gurudakshina on GuruPurnima.

The RSS is an ideological parent and mentor organisation to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Many leaders of the BJP have been members of RSS including the Prime Minister.

The RSS and its affiliates are extensively involved in social service and disaster relief activities. RSS volunteers are often among the first to respond during the national disaster.

RSS has always been central to controversies, be it Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s assassination or demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.
