Doing their bit for society

The good doctor
Adentist by profession, Dr Gauri Tolani Haryani wishes to serve people by providing them with the best healthcare service. She collaborated with two fellow medical professionals to create a one-stop destination for people to access good healthcare. Says she, “I run a clinic called Health+ Dental and Multispeciality clinic near Pune station. I have collaborated with a homeopathic doctor and an MBBS doctor. We want to provide the best healthcare facilities under one roof and all our efforts are directed towards this aim of ours. It’s been just two months since we started the clinic and we have been receiving great response.”

Being a medical practitioner, helping people in some way comes naturally to her. When asked about what is that one thing that she follows, she says, “I come from a family of doctors, so medicine was a natural career choice for me. Helping people is something that has always been my passion. With everything that I am doing currently, I hope I am following my grandfather’s footsteps. He was a doctor with the Indian Army.”

On choosing dentistry, she says, “I have always observed that oral healthcare, which is an important part of our total body care, is generally neglected. If there is a tooth ache, people go to a pharmacist or a general doctor and get a painkiller. But later it could get too late to get the treatment.”

The committed doctor is also an animal lover. “We have pets at home and we also take care of street dogs. In view of the recent cruel act against a stray dog that tried to seek shelter in a building in Worli and was beaten up mercilessly, I feel there should be more strict laws for animal safety,” says Haryani who is a staunch believer of Karma.

Language of compassion
Pallavi Sahay works with a top automobile company of the country which has a plant in Ranjangaon. She is a representative of Viman Nagar Women’s Club that undertakes social initiatives like traffic drives and many more. Speaking about the same, she says, “Since I am a part of VNWC, I am associated with this club. We do different activities. I believe that we should collectively do something for society as we are a responsible part of it. I support social causes for special children also, as I am a mother of one. I know the patients of Cerebral Palsy in and around Pune. They need our support, love and affection.”

Currently Sahay is involved in the work of Rajul Vasa Foundation. To cater to Cerebral Palsy patients, Dr Rajul Vasa, a scientist, opened centres in Mumbai and Nashik but for Pune patients, it was difficult to visit these centres. So in Pune, Sahay facilitated the opening of the centre. One after the other, the centre is achieving great milestones.

Sahay says that helping and keeping people around her happy keeps her happy and motivated too.

Education is the only solution
Bhawana Tolani believes in the power of education. She is also fond of creative writing. A diploma holder in creative writing from IGNOU Open University, she has written a few articles on philosophy for magazines as well.

Speaking about how she enjoys teaching, Tolani says, “Teaching has been my passion. I enjoyed teaching school kids as well as a special batch of homemakers introducing them to the world of computers. After my kids came along, they became my priority and I concentrated on their education. Today, my daughter is a doctor and my son is an engineer who owns Pride Borewells and Anand Engineers.”

As for the businesses she is associated with, Tolani adds, “I help my husband in our business (infrastructure). And I am a teacher partner for Cuemath company which is funded by Google. After my kids were settled, I got into teaching again. Currently, I teach Math to 21 children in Viman Nagar. And I learn a lot from these kids. It is very refreshing to look at things differently.”

She says that her own kids too are the major source of motivation for her. Speaking about the philosophy she follows, she says, “I believe a lot in Karma and in never giving up. It is important give your best to any situation. If there is a problem, then there is a solution as well.”
