Great spectacle

En Spectacle — the photography exhibition by The Photographers Blog (TPB) which is being held at Darpan Art Gallery in the city till Sunday, is a visual treat. TPB is a photography institute having a presence in three cities in Maharashtra and En Spactacle is their annual exhibition.

On Friday, the exhibition was inaugurated by Farid Shaikh, a renowned camera collector from the city. Shaikh has a collection of over 3,000 cameras, right from a model which cost Rs 3 in 1835 to the latest digital camera as well as a camera used by Dadasaheb Phalke to make the first Indian film.

“The exhibition features pictures clicked by an 8-year-old as also by someone who is 50. So we have photographers who have different experiences, making this a vivid collection,” says Rohit Chaudhari, director, The Photographers Blog, who has overseen Thane and Nashik leg of the exhibition earlier this year.

“We had entries from all over the country. A panel of judges selected around 100 pictures based on criteria like storytelling, skills, and composition,” Chaudhari added.

On display are some outstanding pictures as well as some simple compositions which bring a smile on your face. One can ‘experience’ the beautiful sunsets across the world as well as some equally charming star-trails.

DIFFERENT STORIES
Father-son duo Yogendra and Soham Joshi have their pictures on display for the second year running. It is all about experimentation for them. Yogendra is known among the city photographers for his macro and wildlife photography as also something unique called ‘High-speed photography.’ “I am currently experimenting with liquids — water drops and soap bubbles. When a water drop falls, it creates a pillar and at that point, if the second drop hits the pillar, there is a splash. In the picture displayed here, there is a third drop that has hit the splash, creating a ripple. This makes it a unique photo,” Yogendra said about his art.

He heaped praises on his son, who had used a heavy gear like Canon 7D Mark II + Canon EF-400mm to click a picture, which is on display. “If I find interesting insects, I love to capture their macro photographs. I also enjoy birding as you get to see some beautiful species,” Soham, a Std VIII student of Walnut School said, before adding that a healthy competition with his dad is making both of them click better photographs.

For Merchant Navy captain Ojas Narappanawar, it helps to have access to landscapes which very few people have. “Only on a cruise ship you can get different kinds of experiences. You get to see blurry water when you are sailing through choppy waters. I had to tie down the camera to the ship railings to get the image of such water. It is a 10-minute long exposure picture which I got around midnight — two hours and 50 shots later,” expressed Narappanawar about his breathtaking snap on board. He added that passion comes before profession and when you mix both, it reaches another level.

He is spot on, as his works on display include portraits, wildlife, cityscapes, landscapes along with pictures which are highly technical, making it a beautiful melange.
