How to get a girlfriend and other stories

On your social media accounts, you must have come across pictures of couples posing at exotic locations or simply having a romantic dinner together. If you are single, you feel like doing the same but you just cannot find someone that you like in your friend circle, and Tinder is not your cup of tea. So what do you do?

This is the real life story of many singles out there. And Marathi movie Girlfriend that releases this Friday, helps you find the solution and tells you how you can fall in love.

Directed by Upendra Sidhaye and starring Amey Wagh, Sai Tamhankar, Rasika Sunil, Isha Keskar, Kavita Lad Medhekar, Yateen Karyekar, Suyog Gorhe, Uday Nene, and Sagar Deshmukh, Girlfriend is claimed to be the first Marathi rom-com that you need to watch in your nearest cinema hall.

The starcast along with the director, recently visited Sakal Times office for a fun interaction and gave us a sneak peek into the movie ahead of its release.

Girlfriend is Sidhaye’s debut directorial. It is the story of Amey Wagh and Sai Tamhankar’s love life. Amey is introduced as a college boy working in a creative industry. He is single and due to the pressure created by social media, he is clearly frustrated for not having a girlfriend. He is praying to get one as soon as possible. Rasika and Suyog are his constants, who want to set him up quickly. They keep pushing him to pursue ‘mission’ and not be shy. Cupid hits the right spot when Sai comes into Amey’s life and changes it for good. How he meets her and how their love blossoms forms the story of Girlfriend. It is a joyride.

Talking about the character of Nachiket that he plays, Amey says, “Playing a person that I am not — shy and single — was not only hilarious but also challenging. This is a character that I just do not relate with, so playing this was a fun experience — I got to be someone I can never be in real life.”

He points out that Nachiket is a fun-loving person who has everything but a girlfriend and that’s a huge problem. “In today’s world, because of social media, not having a girlfriend is a serious issue. We have just addressed it in a comic and fun way,” adds Amey.

Sai, who plays the role of Alisha, says that after a very long time, she has finally got a character that she has enjoyed playing. “My character is mysterious and has different layers to her personality. She is different from the usual girls that we come across in our daily lives,” the actress says.

She points out that even though the movie is a comedy, Alisha is not really a comical person, rather she is a soulful one. And after a very long time, she has got to play a character her age, which is something she truly loved.

Adding fun to the life of the simple and shy Nachiket are Shweta (played by Rasika) and Sandy (played by Suyog), his two friends, who are trying to guide him through life just as true friends do.

Sidhaye points out that initially he had written Girlfriend for it to be a Hindi movie. “But later I realised that releasing this movie in Marathi would be even better. After working on the script and getting the cast in line and seeing how the movie has turned out, I have absolutely no regrets. In fact, I am happy that I got this star cast on board because they have all brought a different got a different feel that they have added to the movie. Be it the main lead or even the supporting actors, all have played such strong characters in the past. It was an amazing experience. It was blissful working with them in my directorial debut,” Sidhaye says.

Girlfriend is set to release on July 26.
