This Maharashtra Day, Sakal has something special for you

Attention Maharashtra, this is not a drill!

As the nation adjusts to the reality of life under self-quarantine amid the coronavirus pandemic, Sakal Media Group has brought a day-streamed event exclusively for Maharashtra Day on May 1. 

The virtual Darbar Swarancha: Maharashtra Day fest will feature a marathon of classical legends. While they share their words of inspiration with renowned anchor-artist Sudhir Gadgil, artists will play some of their favourite folk songs with each artist doing an hour set. 

Starting at 11 am onwards, the 9-hour long special event will be aired on Sakal Media and Sakal Times official Facebook and YouTube platform. 

Here are three of the nine classical legends who will be performing.

Pt Shaunak Abhisheki
A leading maestro among the young generation of musicians, Pt Shaunak Abhisheki has carved himself as an exceptional vocalist of Indian classical music. Carrying out his father’s musical legacy, Shaunak has his representation of Khyal, which is an aesthetic blend of Agra and Jaipur style of Indian Classical Music giving his performance a universal appeal. He also had the privilege of being trained by late Smt. Kamal Tambe of Jaipur Gharana. Among his national awards, he also received an international award given by the French Government named Love da Musique award. 

Shaunak is equally proficient in presenting other genres of Indian music which he presents with thematic presentations like Swarabhishek, Tulsi ke Ram, Kabir and Abhangwani, to name a few. Performed at many major festivals all over the globe- Shaunak has also cut several records with popular labels like Sony-Music, Times-Music, EMI to mention a few.

Rahul Deshpande
Rahul found his musical inspiration through the music of iconic Pt Kumar Gandharva. To begin with, he sought his music guidance from Vidushi Ushatai Chipalkatti and Kumar Gandharva’s son Sri. Mukul Shivputra. He further learned music under the tutelage of Sri. Gangadharbuva Pimpalkhare and Sri. Madhusudhan Patwardhan. He also learned tabla from Sri. Suresh Samant.

Rahul’s powerful rendition and on-the-spot alteration keeps listeners mesmerised. At the same time, his efforts with fast taans, gamaks, more used on instruments, and subtle laya play has also earned him great recognition. His work in the film Katyar Kaljat Ghusali was highly appreciated. 

Mahesh Kale
Mahesh is an accomplished vocalist with a captivating stage presence that he possesses with his unique musicality and vocal skills. This has firmly placed him on the national and international radar for the North Indian Classical Community.

He won the 63rd National Film Award as the Best Playback Singer and honoured with Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad Award for a classical piece in the film Katyar Kaljat Ghusli. Determined to spread awareness and education about classical music in the western wall, Mahesh has been actively giving lecture-demonstrations in various US universities and also teaching music to over 200 students in the San Francisco Bay Area. 

Mahesh began his early music education under the guidance of his mother, Smt. Meenal Kale and presently continues to receive guidance from Shri. Shaunal Abhisheki.
