Maharashtra Day: Sit back, celebrate the statehood through a daylong musical journey

Turn your quarantine into a stay-home party with us on Maharashtra Day. 

The nation as we know is on lockdown with the advent of the coronavirus pandemic, looking for hope and ways to communicate - but also just something else beside news. To honour Maharashtra Day, Sakal Media Group is bringing to you Darbar Swarancha, a day-streaming event where well known classical legends will take you on a mesmerising-culturally rich journey on Friday, May 1. 

From Shaunak Abhisheki to Sukanya Ramgopal, these musicians will share their words of inspiration and play to their favourite folk tune doing an hour set each. 

The nine-hour special, which airs today (May 1) at 11 am, will be hosted by reputed anchor-artist Sudhir Gadgil.

Darbar Swarancha takes the form of an online music festival, intending to encourage everyone to stay indoors and provide entertainment and light relief in these uncertain times.

Here are our classical legends that will be stream exclusively on our official Facebook and YouTube this Maharashtra Day.

PANDIT SHAUNAK ABHISHEKI
11 AM - 12 PM

A leading maestro among the young generation of musicians, Pt Shaunak Abhisheki has carved himself as an exceptional vocalist of Indian classical music. Carrying out his father's musical legacy, Shaunak has his representation of Khyal, which is an aesthetic blend of Agra and Jaipur style of Indian Classical Music giving his performance a universal appeal. 

Performed at many major festivals all over the globe- Shaunak has also cut several records with popular labels like Sony-Music, Times-Music, EMI to mention a few.

RAHUL DESHPANDE
12 PM - 1 PM

Rahul Deshpande found his musical inspiration through the music of iconic Pt Kumar Gandharva. 

Rahul's powerful rendition and on-the-spot alteration keep listeners mesmerised. At the same time, his efforts with fast taans, gamaks, more used on instruments, and subtle laya play has earned him great recognition. He judged the popular reality television show "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa-Little Champs" by Zee Marathi and the "Sangeet Samrat parva2" by Zee Yuva. His work in the film Katyar Kaljat Ghusali was also highly appreciated. 

MAHESH KALE
1 PM - 2 Pm

Mahesh is an accomplished vocalist with a captivating stage presence that he possesses with his unique musicality and vocal skills. This has firmly placed him on the national and international radar for the North Indian Classical Community.

He won the 63rd National Film Award as the Best Playback Singer and honoured with Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad Award for a classical piece in the film Katyar Kaljat Ghusli. 

PANDIT ANAND BHATE
2 PM - 3 PM

In a new wave of great Kirana tradition Anand Bhate, popularly known as Anand Gandharva, is one of the great promising artists. He played at the prestigious Sawai Gandharva music festival in Pune on various occasions.

Anand has participated in many prestigious music conferences across India and abroad including Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav, Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki Sangeet Samaroha, Learnquest Music Conference, etc. His success in the US has entered the Marathi-speaking Diaspora. 

PANDIT VIJAY GHATE
3 PM - 4 PM

Vijay Ghate is known as one of the present generation's brightest and most entertaining tabla players. His fingertips conveyed all of the universe's unrivalled vibration. His physical and emotional nature is nothing but a rhythmic ocean. Playing the tabla isn't just his passion but his faith. Of this instrument, he is an enthusiastic Saadhak. 

Performed at many major festivals around the world- Vijay Ghate is a recipient of Saraswati Bai Rane Puraskar, Dr Vasantrao Deshpande Puraskar, Pt. Jasraj Puraskar, and Padma Shri in 2014.

BEGUM PARVEEN SULTANA & USTAAD DILSHADJI
4 PM - 5 PM

The breathtaking voice of Begum Parveen Sultana is renowned for its expression, clarity and versatility. Spreading almost four octaves, in a moment, she can swing from cautious meditations to strong evocations of the divine. She is a modern Hindustani beauty with classical khayal, devotional bhajan and poetic thumri.

Ustad Dilshad Khan music of art belongs to Sikhar Gharana, which has brought Indian classical music to many stalwarts. Born in Kolkata, he began learning tabla at the age of four. Still, he later took up singing under the guidance of N.C Chakravorty, Banarjee Hidan and Gyan Prakash Ghosh. Khan became a disciple of Kirana Gharana vocalist Padmashree Faiyaz Ahmed Khan after he moved to Mumbai permanently. 

SELVAGANESH (FATHER AND SON DUO)
5 PM - 6 PM

V. Selvaganesh, Grammy-award winner's son and disciple Vidwan Vikku Vinayakram, is one of the most celebrated names in the Indian percussion region. 

Swaminathan, Selvaganesh's son, is an excellent player from Kanjira who was taught by his grandparents. The father-son duo is incredibly proud to play together, and their artistic connection is what translates into their songs. The duo entirely relies on the magic of spontaneity when it comes to performing.

RONU MAJUMDAR
6 PM - 7 PM

Pandit Ronu Majumdar is a world-renowned, Grammy-nominated, and multiple award-winning Bansuri flautist from the Hindustani tradition of Indian. He is also a pioneer in Indo-world fusion pop. 

He has also collaborated with Ravi Shankar, Philip Glass, Ry Cooder, George Harrison, Michael Stipe, Bela Fleck, Trilok Gurtu, Asha Bhosle, R.D. Burman, Baaba Maal and Jon Hassell, a successful recording artist in his own right. Since the early 1990s, his flute has become a close constant in Bollywood soundtrack.

The "shank bansuri," a three-foot-long flute he designed is his special instrument. An innovative composer, he has also written pieces in a fusion of classical Hindustani with other forms of music, including different African and Asian folk styles and new age.

SUKANYA RAMGOPAL
7 PM - 8 PM

Sukkanya Ramgopal also known as the first lady of Ghatam, is the best-recognized female exponent of the Ghatam. Born in Mayiladuthurai in Tamilnadu, at the tender age of 12, Sukkanya initially began studying in the mridangam at Sri Jaya Ganesh Talavadya Vidyalaya in Chennai, under the tutelage of Sri T. R. Harihara Sharma. Under Sri Gurumurthy, she even played the guitar.

She has been awarded the 2014 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Carnatic instrumental music.
