When you see the low-lying areas and railway tracks getting submerged in water, you know that rains have arrived in Mumbai. Everyone knows that waterlogging is an annual feature the residents of the megapolis have learnt to adjust with and even enjoy in their own way.
@mumbairains was the hottest trending topic on Twitter for hours on Friday and Twitterati came up with interesting memes and posts. One user posted a pic of potholes on Mumbai roads filled with rain water and said, ‘BMC filled-up all the potholes on Mumbai roads before monsoon’. Another one posted a screenshot of his route and fare saying, ‘@Olacabs, You seriously gotta be kidding me! The distance is just 20 KMS! For this rate I’ll reach Delhi from Mumbai in third tier AC Garib Rath.” There were some who put up onion pakoda and chai or Batata Vada and chai pics while many borrowed from Bollywood scenes and added lines on Mumbai roads and Ola and Uber drivers.
The tone in many posts was not of complaint as just a day before the rains, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had started drawing water from the reserve stock to cater to the increased water demands of the city due to a delayed monsoon. Now that the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted moderate to heavy showers in Mumbai in the next 24-36 hours, both the citizens and the BMC are heaving a sigh of relief.
