Well, Sex and the City revival is going to be exciting. Earlier this year, actor Sahar Jessica Parker did us a huge favour and announced that an official Sex and the City revival is on its way. The original series, which aired on HBO, took us through the lives of four best friends - Carrie Bradshaw (Parker), Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) - in New York City.
The kind of fandom commanded by the series, which had 94 episodes and aired from 1998 to 2004, led to two successful sequel movies - Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010). Well, there could have been a third movie that Parker told Extra, “had this beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script,” but didn’t because of Kim Cattrall’s rumoured demands. And even though the actress, who essays Samantha in the series, will not be returning to the revival we are glad and extremely excited to meet the other three friends.
Parker revealed to Vanity Fair that there is a possibility of COVID-19 playing a part in the series. She said that the pandemic will “obviously be part of the storyline, because that’s the city [these characters] live in. And how has that changed relationships once friends disappear? I have great faith that the writers are going to examine it all.”
During the interview, she also hinted that the show will follow the characters in their 50’s figuring out things in the city. We will probably be able to see the girls struggle with new emotions, career and maybe social media will play a big part in the series. There is also a possibility of seeing Carrie and her friends adapting to the new tech! A few reports even suggested that the trio has expanded their friend circle and it would be fascinating to see their interaction with the new characters.
Whatever is in the waiting, we are excited to see Carrie and Mr Big back together with her band of friends sipping cosmos!
Although earlier this year, Parker made it clear that despite Cattrall not being a part of the revival, they are not looking for a fourth character to replace Samantha, and said “We have New York City as the fourth character.” It is, however, now confirmed that Grey's Anatomy star Sara Ramírez will be a part of the cast and will essay the character of Che Diaz. Deadline reported that she’ll be is a non-binary stand-up comedian who knows Carrie Bradshaw, who features in podcast regularly.
It goes unsaid that the Sex and the City fans would miss Samantha dearly; there is some relief in knowing that most of the cast from the original series will be joining ‘And Just Like That’. According to reports, actors Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg, Willie Garson, and Evan Handler have all signed on to once again play Anthony, Steve, Stanford, and Harry, respectively. Chris Noth and John Corbett will also be reprising the role as Mr Big, who married Carrie in the first movie, and Aiden, who she bumped into in the second film (team Aiden can rejoice!).
According to reports, the writers' room opened in January 2021 and the production was to begin in New York City in spring, but there is nothing on the release date yet!
