Megastar Rajinikanth is all set to receive this year's Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest film honour, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar informed. "Happy to announce this year's Dadasaheb Phalke award to one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema Rajnikant ji. His contribution as actor, producer and screenwriter has been iconic," Javadekar, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, shared the news on Twitter.

India’s highest film honour (award) is named after, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke who is the father of Indian cinema and was instituted in 1969. The award is conferred by the government for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Film Industry.

Rajinikanth started his acting career with the Tamil film Apoorva Raagangal, released in the year 1975. He went on to work in chartbusters like, Thalapathi, Baashha, Annamalai, Muthu, Sivaji: The Boss, Chandramukhi, Enthiran and the list goes on. Rajinikanth’s last film Darbar, directed by AR Murugadoss was released in 2020. It is a Tamil-language action thriller film and was produced by Allirajah Subaskaran under Lyca Productions. As soon as the news came out that the megastar will receive this prestigious award, his fans showered congratulatory messages on Twitter. Check some of them below:

Rajinikanth is the 12th South Indian to receive this prestigious award. Legends like Dr Rajkumar, Akkineni Nageshwar Rao, K Balachander have been felicitated before. On the workfront, ‘The Thala’ is presently shooting for his upcoming film Annaatthe.

PIB India declared that the Dadasaheb Phalke award will be conferred on May 3, this year along with the distribution of National Film Awards 2019. Rajinikanth's close friend and co-star from Hum, Amitabh Bachchan in 2018 was conferred with this award.
