While many assumed the younger generation prioritized parties, they are proving otherwise, with data showing that they now dominate visits to India’s spiritual and heritage destinations. According to Zostel data, these travelers are seeking meaningful experiences, authentic local connections, and opportunities to immerse themselves in culture alongside their spiritual journeys.
Young travelers are no longer just checking temples off their itinerary. They want immersive experiences, connecting with locals, exploring culture, and soaking in the atmosphere alongside spirituality. This shift is evident in places like Rishikesh, where Gen Z accounted for 59% of visitors in 2025, with millennials adding another 38.3% nearly the entire footfall. And this trend isn’t confined to Rishikesh; it is now shaping travel patterns across India’s spiritual and heritage destinations.
The shift toward spiritual and experiential travel is spreading beyond just one or two locations.
Aurangabad saw a 6.8% rise in tourism demand in 2025, particularly around Grishneshwar Temple and the Ajanta–Ellora caves.
Gokarna experienced a 25.3% growth, showing young travelers’ preference for destinations that combine spirituality with unique experiences.
Hampi and McLeod Ganj recorded steady increases of 17.8% and 18.3%, respectively.
Mysore continued to attract consistent visitors, reflecting sustained interest in heritage and spiritual tourism.
What makes this trend even more striking is that it is largely driven by Indian travelers. In 2025, international visitors accounted for only around 10% of spiritual travel demand across Zostel’s network. Young Indians are leading the charge, and in destinations like Varanasi, they aren’t just there for rituals. They take sunrise walks along the ghats, attend evening aartis, and explore local food trails. The focus is on experiencing the place fully, a shift that is defining the future of spiritual travel in India.
