Navratri 2025: Navratri 2025: On Saturday, the Durga Puja festivities began on a heartfelt note in North Bombay as sisters Kajol and Rani Mukerjee joined their family’s annual tradition. The cousins, along with Tanisha Mukerjee, were seen unveiling the first look of the Durga Maa idol at the pandal, their faces reflecting joy and reverence.
Kajol and Rani, along with Tanisha, pulled back the curtains to reveal the intricately crafted idol as the chants of the Durga Devi Strotram, Aigiri Nandini, filled the air.
The festivities became emotional for them as they reminisced about Ayan Mukerji's father, Deb Mukherjee, who died in March 2025. Deb Mukherjee was the primary organizer of this esteemed Durga Puja. A viral clip showed sisters Kajol, Rani, Sharbani, and Tanisha hugging each other, looking teary-eyed & clearly moved.
Kajol and Rani Mukerji come from the Mukerjee family, which has a long-standing tradition of celebrating Durga Puja annually in their North Bombay residence. The family has been organizing the festival for decades, making it a major cultural and familial event for them, and the sisters actively participate each year.
Everyone was attired in traditional clothing. Kajol wore a silk saree complemented by a red blouse. Rani appeared charming in a white saree featuring a black and red floral border. Ayan Mukerjee chose a white kurta pyjama.
Durga Puja, also known as Durgotsava or Sharodotsava, is a yearly Hindu festival honoring the goddess Durga and her victory over the demon Mahishasur. In Hindu mythology, it is believed that the goddess comes down to her earthly abode during this time to bless her devotees. This year, Durga Puja begins on September 28 (Shashthi) and concludes on October 2 (Vijayadashami).
