Ranchi: One of India’s leading on-demand delivery platform - Swiggy, recently launched its latest service that enables home delivery of alcohol. The feature is available under the 'Wine Shops' category on the Swiggy app.

The alcohol delivery service went live on the app today in Ranchi after obtaining necessary approvals from the Jharkhand government. The service is expected to go live in other cities in the state within a week.

The authorities at Swiggy, are also in advanced stages of discussions with multiple state governments to provide support for online processing and home delivery of alcohol, in their respective states.

Speaking about the introduction of the category, Anuj Rathi, VP - Products, Swiggy said, "Since the beginning of the pandemic, Swiggy has relentlessly worked to solve customer pain points and support local governments in every way possible. Taking advantage of our existing technology and infrastructure to enable hyperlocal deliveries, we have been working closely with the local authorities to support them with initiatives like the expansion of grocery delivery and COVID-19 relief efforts.”

“By enabling home delivery of alcohol in a safe and responsible manner, we can generate additional business for retail outlets while solving the problem of overcrowding, thereby promoting social distancing," he added.

To ensure safe delivery, Swiggy has introduced measures such as mandatory age verification and user authentication on the app before completing deliveries. Customers, wanted to order alcohol, need to complete their instant age verification by uploading a picture of their valid government ID, followed by a selfie which the platform will use for authentication using an AI-powered system.

Along with that, all orders will also carry a unique OTP which needs to be provided by the customer at the time of delivery. The company has also ensured capping on the order quantity to ensure customers do not hoard.

Shortly after the announcement of the lockdown, Swiggy also launched its Swiggy Genie feature that enabled pick up and drop service for essential items. The service providers have been leading good initiatives and have also enabled food delivery during the fourth phase of the lockdown.
