Pune: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is playing a transformative role in the judiciary, making legal research more comprehensive and efficient, stated former Chief Justice Dr. Dhananjay Chandrachud. He was addressing a lecture organized by the Indian Law Society (ILS) and ILS Law College in memory of Prof. S. P. Sathe. The discussion centered on "Empowering Governance and Justice Through Artificial Intelligence: Balancing Innovation with Accountability."
AI in Judiciary: A Boon with Ethical Challenges
Dr. Chandrachud emphasized that while AI enhances judicial efficiency, it cannot replace human reasoning and logical judgment. He highlighted that the integration of AI in the legal system has streamlined case management and legal research, but also raises ethical concerns regarding accountability and bias in decision-making.
The event saw the presence of S. V. Kanetkar, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Society; Vaijayanti Joshi, Secretary of the Indian Law Society; and Dr. Deepa Paturkar, Acting Principal of ILS Law College.
During the session, Dr. Chandrachud discussed how AI is being effectively used in judicial processes and addressed the moral and ethical considerations that arise with its implementation. The session was moderated by Dr. Swati Yogesh.
