Pune: Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has taken a stern stance regarding the rising crime rates in Pune, directly warning the city’s Police Commissioner to deliver results or be replaced. Speaking at the government guest house in Pune, Pawar expressed frustration over the police force’s failure to maintain law and order despite having sufficient resources and independence from political interference.
Rising Crime Rates Cause Concern
Highlighting recent incidents such as the rise of "Koyta gangs," murders, and thefts, Pawar criticized the inefficiency of the police department. “The government has provided vehicles, offices, and infrastructure to the police. Despite this, issues of law and order persist. If the Police Commissioner cannot manage, they should step aside, and we will bring in someone capable,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister also stated that he and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis have taken these issues seriously. He emphasized that the responsibility of maintaining a peaceful society rests with the government and its law enforcement agencies.
Deadline for Results
Ajit Pawar further clarified that the Police Commissioner would be given a specific timeframe to improve the situation. “Show results within the stipulated time, or we will be forced to replace you with another officer,” he said firmly.
Discussion with Chief Minister
Pawar revealed plans to discuss the city’s law and order situation with Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis. “The public has entrusted us with governance once again. Ensuring peace and safety is our responsibility. We will question the Police Commissioner and hold them accountable for the current state of affairs,” he added.
