Pune, 4th December 2024: The Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) course, which is currently offered in multiple durations, will return to a one-year format starting from the academic year 2026-27.
The change is part of the New National Education Policy (NEP) aimed at restructuring teacher training programs. The Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) rules and criteria will also undergo significant revisions to align with the updated framework.
The new structure will be implemented before the first batch of four-year integrated undergraduate program graduates appears for the TET in 2027. The NEP divides teacher preparation into four stages: foundational, preparatory, middle, and secondary.
New B.Ed. Structure and Eligibility
With changes in undergraduate degree requirements, several B.Ed. programs will be reintroduced.
According to an official notification to be issued soon, students completing a four-year integrated degree will be eligible for direct admission to a one-year B.Ed. course.
Those with a traditional three-year undergraduate degree can enroll in a two-year B.Ed. program, while postgraduate degree holders will qualify for the one-year format.
Students in integrated B.Ed. programs or those completing two-year B.Ed. courses will also become eligible for M.Ed. degrees. This shift is expected to benefit candidates aspiring to become teachers by offering greater flexibility and streamlined pathways.
Introduction of New Specializations
The first batch of integrated B.Ed. programs like BA-B.Ed., B.Sc.-B.Ed., and B.Com.-B.Ed. commenced in 2023. From 2025, new specializations in Physical Education, Art Education, Yoga Education, and Sanskrit Education will be added.
These programs will also be open to students aspiring to teach directly after completing Class 12.
