Pune: Once known primarily for its religious significance and wildlife sanctuary, Bhimashankar is now gaining recognition for a different reason—strawberry farming. Over the past two years, local farmers have turned to commercial strawberry cultivation, significantly boosting their incomes.
ICICI Foundation, in collaboration with the Forest Department, launched this initiative to promote sustainable farming and rural development. The project initially provided 135,000 strawberry saplings to 90 farmers across 16 villages, enabling them to establish successful strawberry farms.
Farmers Benefit from Organic Cultivation & Government Support
During a recent farm inspection, ICICI Foundation Chairman Sanjay Dutta expressed satisfaction over the progress, stating: "Strawberry cultivation in Bhimashankar has turned into a success story. With increasing yields and rising market demand, this region is set to become a major strawberry hub."
Strawberry farmer Laxman Mawale also shared his experience, highlighting the importance of organic fertilizers (Jeevamrut), advanced irrigation techniques, and favorable climatic conditions in ensuring high-quality produce.
To further encourage farmers, the government has announced a subsidy of ₹1.2 crore, which will support the expansion of strawberry farming in the region.
Strawberries from Bhimashankar Now Exported to Dubai
The ICICI Foundation team actively supports farmers with on-ground training and technical guidance. A major milestone in the project has been the successful export of Bhimashankar strawberries to Dubai, fetching an impressive price of ₹1,100 per kg in the international market.
