Pune: The Transport Department has launched a crackdown on BlaBlaCar, a popular carpooling app used by commuters in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nashik. Accused of facilitating unauthorized passenger transport, the app has come under scrutiny for violating regulations.
Inspections and Penalties
Special teams have been stationed at major checkpoints, including Navale Bridge, Chandni Chowk, and Pune Station, to identify private vehicles offering rides through BlaBlaCar. Officers are operating undercover by booking rides on the app to gather details about drivers and passengers. Vehicles found violating regulations may face confiscation.
Passenger Reactions
The move has drawn criticism from passengers who relied on the app for its affordability and convenience. Many expressed frustration, stating that the crackdown disrupts an efficient alternative to traditional transport.
“BlaBlaCar was economical and environmentally friendly, promoting fuel efficiency and reducing single-occupancy travel. This decision feels like a step backward,” said a regular user.
Call for Regulation
Critics of the action argue that instead of penalizing such platforms, the government should work to legalize and regulate them. They highlighted the benefits of carpooling in easing traffic congestion, cutting fuel usage, and providing commuters with safe and affordable options.
Transport Department’s Justification
In its defense, the Transport Department clarified that private vehicles being used for commercial purposes through platforms like BlaBlaCar breach established regulations. “This unfairly impacts licensed transport operators, and the crackdown is necessary to uphold legal compliance,” the department stated.
