Pune: The Indian Railways' Central Railway division has launched its latest "Restaurant on Wheels" facility at Akurdi railway station. Officially inaugurated recently, the restaurant began operations on Friday, offering round-the-clock service to railway passengers, students, and residents in the area.

According to Nitin Choughule, Director of Restaurant on Wheels, the facility boasts a design reminiscent of a royal palace. The interiors of the restaurant have been refurbished from a 24-meter-long decommissioned railway coach, showcasing attractive decor that enhances the dining experience. The restaurant offers an array of meals, snacks, and beverages at affordable prices.

This initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to repurpose old railway coaches into functional and revenue-generating spaces. The concept debuted at Asansol railway station in West Bengal in February 2020 and has since expanded to other locations.

Akurdi's "Restaurant on Wheels" is the third such establishment in the Pune Railway Division, following similar facilities at Chinchwad (opened in December 2022) and Pune railway stations.

Meeting Local Needs

The Akurdi railway station area is home to numerous schools and colleges. Local students often struggle to find food at night when traditional restaurants are closed. This facility provides a convenient and reliable option for students, railway passengers, and residents alike, addressing a significant gap in dining services.

Restaurant Features:

  • A palace-themed interior that offers a unique dining experience.

  • Seating for up to 11 tables.

  • A menu with reasonably priced and hygienic food options.

  • A focus on delivering hygienic and delicious meals to patrons.

This innovative dining solution highlights Indian Railways' commitment to enhancing passenger amenities while simultaneously supporting local communities.
