Bor Ghat to Get Two New Railway Tracks, Cutting Pune-Mumbai Travel Time
Pune: In a major step to enhance the rail connectivity between Pune and Mumbai, two new tracks are set to be constructed in the Bor Ghat section.
The Konkan Railway has initiated the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed tracks, and a LiDAR survey has already been conducted using helicopter-mounted cameras to map the area. The DPR will be submitted to the Railway Board in the next two months.
The project is expected to cost between ₹8,000 crore to ₹18,000 crore and has seven potential route options under consideration.
The proposed tracks will be designed to accommodate train speeds of up to 120 km/h, significantly reducing travel time between Pune and Mumbai. However, while the new tracks will reduce the steep incline in the ghat section, the overall distance of the route will increase.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is actively supporting the project, and the proposal is expected to receive prompt approval from the Railway Board after the DPR is submitted.
Reduction in Incline
Currently, the Bor Ghat railway incline is the steepest in Asia at a gradient of 1:37, meaning that trains must cover 37 meters to gain 1 meter in height. Trains traveling from Karjat to Lonavala require additional engines (bankers) to help them ascend the steep slope.
The new DPR proposes various options to reduce the incline, with gradients such as 1:100, 1:70, and 1:80 being evaluated.
At present, the Bor Ghat section has three tracks—up, down, and middle. These tracks are often affected by landslides during the monsoon season, causing delays and damage.
Additionally, continuous freight and passenger traffic results in heavy wear on the tracks, particularly on the slopes between Karjat and Lonavala, where extra braking and engine strain are common.
To overcome these challenges, the railway authorities have proposed adding two new tracks along with a new tunnel, which will bring the total number of tracks in the Bor Ghat section to five.
Key Benefits of the New Tracks:
Increased capacity to accommodate more trains
Trains will maintain their speed without the need for deceleration
Bankers will no longer be necessary for trains traveling uphill from Karjat to Lonavala
Alternative routes will be available in case of landslides or accidents
The lifespan of rails will increase due to the flat gradient
Minimal disruption to passenger services
Faster travel times between Pune and Mumbai
With these developments, rail travel between Pune and Mumbai is expected to become significantly more efficient, providing a faster and more reliable service for passengers.
