Pune, 20 August 2025: The legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the symbol of valour and Swarajya, and the legendary Maratha statesman Mahadaji Shinde, will soon gain a permanent place in New York City. Plans are underway to install statues of the two great warriors at a well-known tourist spot in the city, marking a proud moment for the global Marathi community.
The project is a joint effort of the Shinde Sarkar Foundation and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Pratishthan, New York. The statues, crafted by noted sculptor Vivek Khatawkar, are already in progress.
Organizers say the idea is to showcase the vision of Shivaji Maharaj’s Swarajya and the diplomatic success of Mahadji Shinde before the world, ensuring their legacy continues to inspire generations.
The concept was initiated by Uttamrao Shinde Sarkar, with support expected from India’s central and state cultural departments. A significant financial outlay is involved, and contributions from the wider community are being sought.
The date of the unveiling will be announced shortly. Invitations are expected to go out to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior leaders including Sharad Pawar, Union Ministers Amit Shah and Jyotiraditya Shinde, along with Maharashtra leaders such as Devendra Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar, and Eknath Shinde.
Cultural figures, entrepreneurs from New York, and artists from the Marathi film industry, including director Mukesh Kanhere and actor Pravin Tarde, are also likely to be present.
With Pune playing a central role in shaping this initiative, the event is set to project Maratha pride and cultural heritage on an international stage.
