China has overtaken the United States to claim the top position on the ranking of the world’s fastest supercomputers, but experts say the outcome may reflect Beijing’s drive to demonstrate independence in computing infrastructure more than its actual status in the global AI competition.
The LineShine system at the National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen, China, is powered by indigenously developed chips and has secured the number one position on the TOP500, the biennial global ranking of supercomputers, marking the country’s first appearance on the list in three years.
The ranking emerges amid intensifying competition between the U.S. and China in advanced computing, with U.S. President Donald Trump signing an executive order on Monday intended to give the U.S. an edge over China in the nascent realm of quantum computing.
In the June 2026 edition of the TOP500 list,
LineShine surpassed the former leader, El Capitan—a supercomputer located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory that the U.S. government relies on to design and sustain its nuclear weapons arsenal.
However, technology and policy specialists interviewed by Reuters said the findings do not necessarily indicate that China possesses the world’s fastest computer for AI tasks, due to recent changes in the computing industry and the methodology used to assemble the ranking.
LineShine placed fourth in a benchmark test intended to mimic computing workloads that more closely resemble AI applications.
Benchmark Tests
For many years, supercomputers linked numerous standalone machines to tackle complex scientific challenges, such as simulating interactions between atoms, and were primarily used by national laboratories and universities.
To earn a place on the TOP500 list, supercomputer operators are required to run a series of benchmark tests designed to replicate this type of workload.
In recent years, cloud computing giants including Microsoft (MSFT.O), Amazon.com (AMZN.O), and Alphabet’s Google (GOOGL.O) have developed their own massive supercomputers, but have designed them specifically for artificial intelligence applications instead.
Most of these companies choose not to compete for a position on the TOP500 ranking.
According to research conducted last year by AI policy experts Konstantin Pilz, James Sanders, Robi Rahman, and Lennart Heim concluded that xAI’s Colossus system, owned by SpaceX (SPCX.O), was probably already more powerful than the U.S. government’s El Capitan supercomputer.
Chip Design Efforts
Experts said China’s appearance on the list more likely indicates that Beijing is seeking acknowledgment for its chip design achievements, marking a shift from recent years.
China first claimed the top position on the TOP500 ranking in 2010 and alternated the title with the United States and Japan until 2023, when it stopped submitting its systems.
This withdrawal followed years of export restrictions on chips and advanced computing technologies imposed initially under the Trump administration and later continued by President Joe Biden.
