Pune: An elderly citizen from Bopodi was duped of ₹7.63 lakh by a cyber thief who threatened to disconnect their electricity supply. The incident came to light when the victim filed a complaint at Khadki police station.

The suspect, who identified himself as Gaurav Joshi, has been charged in connection with the fraud.

The police report states that the victim, a resident of the Bopodi area along the Mumbai-Pune Road, was contacted by the thief via mobile phone. The scammer, posing as an electricity board official, warned of an impending disconnection due to unpaid bills.

To prevent this, the victim was instructed to download a mobile app and enter their bank account details. The scammer then exploited this confidential information to withdraw ₹7.63 lakh from the victim's account.

Police Inspector Gajanan Chormale is investigating the case.
