Pune: The Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics has announced the appointment of eminent economist Dr. Bibek Debroy as its new Chancellor.

This appointment, facilitated by the Servants of India Society (SIS) and the institute, marks a significant milestone as Dr. Debroy returns to the institute where he began his illustrious career from 1983 to 1987.

Currently serving as the Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) and a former member of the NITI Aayog, Dr. Debroy brings a wealth of experience in economic research and policy-making. His previous roles include senior positions at the Centre for Policy Research (CPR) and the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER).

The Gokhale Institute, a deemed university renowned for its contributions to economics, economic policies, government schemes, and various surveys, is expected to benefit immensely from Dr. Debroy's leadership.

His significant contributions to the field of economics, alongside his prolific work as an author and translator, have been recognized with numerous awards, including the prestigious Padma Shri in 2015 and the Sir R. G. Bhandarkar Memorial Award.

Reflecting on Dr. Debroy's appointment, Dr. Ajit Ranade, Vice-Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute, expressed confidence in the institute's future under his guidance, highlighting the pride in Dr. Debroy's career originating from the institute itself.
