Pune: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has introduced CNG buses as an alternative to its electric bus fleet, which frequently experiences breakdowns due to charging-related issues. The new measure aims to ensure uninterrupted passenger service, particularly during afternoon hours when E-bus battery depletion leads to route failures.
CNG Buses Fill the Gap in Afternoon Service
PMPML has initiated this project at its Bhekrai Nagar depot, where 25% of the fleet has been converted to CNG buses. The pilot initiative has significantly reduced complaints regarding mid-route bus failures.
Charging constraints have been a major challenge for E-buses. A fully charged electric bus runs for approximately 110 to 115 kilometers in the morning session, but battery levels decline in the afternoon. Due to limited charging infrastructure and time constraints, many buses are unable to return to the depot for recharging, leading to sudden breakdowns.
To mitigate these issues, PMPML has allocated a 45-minute midday charging window. However, due to traffic congestion and operational delays, many drivers are unable to charge their buses during this period. To ensure uninterrupted service, PMPML has deployed CNG buses in the afternoon hours, reducing the number of trip cancellations and providing a reliable commuting option for passengers.
CNG Bus Expansion Across PMPML Depots
PMPML currently operates five electric bus depots at Pune Station, Bhekrai Nagar, Wagholi, Baner, and Nigdi, with a fleet of 490 electric buses. However, aging vehicles and charging-related technical difficulties have affected service reliability.
Following the success of the Bhekrai Nagar CNG bus deployment, PMPML has announced plans to expand the initiative to Baner and Nigdi depots, where 25% of the fleet will also be converted to CNG buses.
Two New E-Bus Depots to Become Operational in April
PMPML has also completed work on two new electric bus depots in Hinjewadi Phase-2 and Charholi. These depots are scheduled to commence operations in the second week of April, further expanding PMPML's electric bus infrastructure.
The Hinjewadi depot will operate 30 electric buses
The Charholi depot will operate 50 electric buses
"The increasing frequency of electric bus failures and passenger complaints required immediate action. In response, we have introduced 25% CNG buses at the Bhekrai Nagar depot in the first phase. Soon, we will extend this solution to Baner and Nigdi depots, ensuring a more reliable public transport system for commuters," said Deepa Mudhol Munde, Chairperson & Managing Director, PMPML, Pune.
