Pune: The fragrant Aambemohar rice has entered its harvest season, and the price has seen a noticeable increase due to rising demand. The rice is not only in high demand within Maharashtra, particularly in Pune and Mumbai, but also internationally, leading to exports.

This surge in demand has resulted in a 15 to 20 percent increase in the price of Aambemohar rice, which is considered "the king of rice" due to its distinct aroma. Last year, the rice was priced at ₹7,500 per quintal, but the wholesale price now ranges from ₹8,000 to ₹9,000 per quintal.

The rice's fragrance has made it a preferred choice year-round in Maharashtra. However, the cultivation of Aambemohar rice has been primarily concentrated in Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.

Despite this, the rice’s availability in Maharashtra has been decreasing, partly due to rapid urbanization in regions like Pune, Maval, Bhor, and Kamshet, where the rice was once widely cultivated. Farmers in these areas have sold their lands, resulting in a decrease in Aambemohar production, which is now impacting demand.

While the rice is still highly sought after in Maharashtra, the reduced cultivation in the state is contributing to a decline in supply. The export ban on non-Basmati rice has also been lifted, further boosting the market for Aambemohar rice.
