Pune: In a major relief for patients battling Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced free treatment at its Kamla Nehru Hospital.
Patients seeking treatment in private hospitals will also receive financial assistance of up to ₹2 lakh under the “Urban Poor Scheme,” ensuring broader access to necessary healthcare.
Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol shared this development, adding that the life-saving immunoglobulin injections required for GBS treatment would be provided free of cost to patients. This initiative is expected to significantly ease the financial burden on families affected by this rare but severe neurological condition.
The decision follows a meeting convened by Mohol to address the rising number of GBS cases in the city. During discussions with Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale and Health Chief Dr. Neena Borade, the challenges posed by the high cost of GBS treatment were reviewed.
“GBS treatment can be prohibitively expensive for many. We have directed the PMC to step in and offer financial aid to Pune residents to ensure timely and effective treatment,” Mohol said after the meeting.
The PMC’s initiative reflects a commitment to strengthening healthcare services for critical illnesses and providing equitable access to advanced medical treatment for underprivileged citizens.
