A man murdered his female friend and then walked straight into the local police station to confess his crime. The chilling sequence of events has sparked outrage and fear in the community, reigniting debates about women’s safety and mental health in urban India.
According to police sources, the incident took place late Thursday night in a residential lane of Hadapsar. The accused, identified as 29-year-old Rohit Patil (name changed for privacy), and the victim, his close friend Priya Sharma (name changed), were reportedly seen arguing heatedly outside her rented apartment. Neighbors recall hearing raised voices and a sudden scream, but by the time anyone could intervene, tragedy had struck.
Investigators say Rohit allegedly attacked Priya with a sharp object, inflicting fatal injuries. Shockingly, instead of fleeing, he left the scene and made his way directly to the Hadapsar police station, where he surrendered and confessed to the crime.
Police officials have confirmed that the accused arrived at the station in a visibly shaken state, immediately admitting to killing his friend. He handed over the weapon used in the crime and provided details of the altercation that led to the murder.
Senior Inspector Sunil Kadam of Hadapsar Police Station stated, “The accused came to us and confessed. We have arrested him and begun a thorough investigation. Preliminary inquiries suggest a personal dispute escalated into violence, but we are probing all possible angles, including premeditation and mental health factors.”
The victim’s body was sent for post-mortem, and forensic teams have collected evidence from the crime scene. Police are also recording statements from neighbors, friends, and relatives to piece together the events and the nature of the relationship between the accused and the victim.
News of the murder has spread rapidly across Pune, with residents expressing shock and concern over rising crimes against women. Social media is abuzz with demands for stricter safety measures and better mental health support systems.
Local women’s rights groups have condemned the incident, urging authorities to prioritize the safety of women and ensure that such tragedies are not repeated. “This is not just a crime against one woman, but a wake-up call for society to address the root causes of such violence,” said activist Meera Joshi.
The accused has been charged with murder under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. He will be produced before a magistrate, and police are expected to seek custody for further interrogation. Meanwhile, the Hadapsar police have increased patrolling in the area and assured residents of enhanced security.
