
Pune: The Health Department has launched an investigation into contaminated drinking water sources in Pune following a surge in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases.
Water samples collected from the Sinhagad Road area, Khadakwasla Dam, and Pimpri-Chinchwad have tested positive for E. coli and coliform bacteria, raising concerns over public health risks.
The State Public Health Laboratory conducted tests on 144 water samples from different areas of the city. Among them, eight samples were found unfit for consumption, including:
One sample from Khadakwasla Dam
Four samples from Sinhagad Road area
Three samples from Pimpri-Chinchwad
Contaminated Water May Be Linked to GBS Cases
The health department suspects that water contamination could be a factor behind the increasing GBS cases, as nearly 80% of the affected individuals are from the Sinhagad Road area.
The presence of E. coli and coliform bacteria in these water sources indicates contamination from human and animal feces, making the water unsafe for drinking without proper treatment. According to officials, consuming this untreated water can lead to serious bacterial infections and pose a significant health threat to residents.
No Testing for Campylobacter, the Bacteria Linked to GBS
While the tests confirmed the presence of E. coli and coliform bacteria, the State Public Health Laboratory does not conduct testing for Campylobacter jejuni, the bacteria that is scientifically linked to GBS infections. This means that other harmful bacteria could still be present in the water. However, officials confirmed that no chemical pollutants were found in the Khadakwasla Dam water.
