Pune: A simple yet powerful photograph taken during the Pune Book Festival has transformed the life of 28-year-old sanitation worker Preeti Mohite. Captured holding the book Jag Badalnara Bapmanus (“The Man Who Changed the World”), a biography of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Preeti’s image has gone viral, sparking widespread admiration and discussions about the thirst for knowledge amidst adversity.
While collecting trash at the Pune Book Festival held at Ferguson College Grounds in Pune, Preeti noticed the book and began flipping through it, captivated by its content. Author Jagdish Ohol, who witnessed the moment, captured it with his camera.
“This image represents the true spirit of learning,” said Ohol. “Amidst a crowd of affluent readers, a sanitation worker’s interest in Babasaheb’s biography moved me deeply.”
The photo was widely shared across social media, with many lauding Preeti’s determination and curiosity.
Recognition and Rewards
The photo’s virality led to Preeti being felicitated at the book festival. She received the “Bapmanus Special Reader Award” along with books, gifts, and monetary support. She was further honored at the book’s 30th-anniversary event, where promises of financial aid for her daughter’s education were made.
Preeti’s Story
Living in Pune’s Bibwewadi area, Preeti supports her 5-year-old daughter, parents, and brother by working multiple jobs. Limited to an education up to the 5th grade due to financial struggles, she dreams of giving her daughter a better future.
Preeti says, “Babasaheb’s teachings have inspired me to believe that education is the way forward. I am determined to provide my daughter with opportunities I couldn’t have.”
