Pune, 6th August 2025: With just ten days left for the final deadline to install High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP), Pune has recorded a dismal compliance rate. Out of over 26.33 lakh registered vehicles in the city, only around 5.14 lakh have had the mandatory HSRP installed so far roughly 20%.
According to the Regional Transport Office (RTO), around 7.29 lakh vehicle owners in Pune have registered for HSRP so far, with appointments confirmed for 6.69 lakh vehicles. Still, a large number of vehicles remain without the plates, and actual installations are far behind.
The Transport Commissioner has instructed that no services such as renewal or any other RTO-related processes should be provided to vehicles without HSRP. Despite this order, public response has remained sluggish.
The issue is not unique to Pune; other parts of Maharashtra are also showing similar low compliance. Whether the state will extend the deadline once more or begin action against non-compliant vehicle owners remains uncertain.
The implementation of HSRP is mandatory, yet the lack of urgency among vehicle owners has raised concerns about enforcement and awareness.
