Pune: In a significant step towards advancing ophthalmic education, H.V. Desai Eye Hospital (PBMA’s) in Pune organized a first-of-its-kind Virtual Reality (VR)-based surgical training workshop for young ophthalmologists.
The workshop, supported by the All India Ophthalmology Society (AIOS), focused on training doctors in advanced cataract and specialized eye surgeries. A total of 35 ophthalmologists from across Maharashtra participated in 80 hands-on surgical sessions.
Virtual Reality Transforms Ophthalmic Training
The key feature of the workshop was the introduction of "Oculus," an advanced Virtual Reality training system that enables doctors to independently practice each step of cataract surgery in a highly immersive and realistic environment. This innovative technology allows surgeons to refine their skills through repeated practice, ultimately leading to better precision and improved patient outcomes.
“Workshops like these, which focus on practical wet-lab training, are crucial for preparing the next generation of eye surgeons,” said Dr. Rahul Deshpande, Chief Medical Director, and Dr. Kuldeep Dole, Director of H.V. Desai Eye Hospital.
Western India’s First VR-Based Eye Surgery Training
Highlighting the significance of the event, Dr. Sucheta Kulkarni, Medical Director of H.V. Desai Eye Hospital, stated, “This is the first time such advanced VR technology has been introduced for ophthalmic training in Western India. It has the potential to revolutionize how eye surgeons are trained.”
The workshop was conducted under the guidance of the Maharashtra Ophthalmology Society and Poona Ophthalmology Society.
Senior ophthalmologist Dr. Ashwini Gaikwad emphasized that H.V. Desai Eye Hospital is well-equipped with a specialized wet lab to provide comprehensive surgical training for budding ophthalmologists.
“By incorporating cutting-edge technology into ophthalmic education, H.V. Desai Eye Hospital continues to uphold its commitment to providing world-class eye care,” said Parvez Bilimoria, Executive Director of the hospital.
