Pune: A significant case of unauthorized tree felling has been reported in Survey No. 63 of Kondhwa Budruk, sparking outrage among local residents and environmentalists.

Despite mandatory permissions required from the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Tree Authority Committee for such activities, large-scale tree cutting was carried out without approval.

Residents allege that the PMC administration deliberately turned a blind eye to the violation, suggesting that the trees were felled to benefit a specific builder.

Locals have raised concerns about the environmental damage caused by such activities, questioning the effectiveness of tree conservation efforts. “How can we ensure environmental protection when large-scale tree cutting continues unchecked?” asked a local resident.

The incident occurred near the Rajgruhi Residency Complex in Kondhwa Budruk, where several large trees were reportedly cut under the cover of darkness. Upon receiving information about the tree cutting, PMC officials conducted a survey of the area.

Vijay Nevase, horticulture supervisor from the Kondhwa-Yewalewadi Ward Office, stated, “Our team inspected the site after receiving the complaint and documented the incident. Notices have been issued to those responsible, and a case will be filed for unauthorized tree felling.”

This incident comes at a time when the state government is spending crores on tree plantation drives to promote environmental conservation. Unauthorized tree cutting undermines these efforts, raising concerns about the PMC's commitment to protecting the environment.
