Born on July 19, 1938, in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, Jayant Narlikar was a prodigious student who went on to become a global authority in astrophysics and cosmology. He completed his undergraduate studies at Banaras Hindu University and later earned his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, working under the legendary cosmologist Fred Hoyle.
Narlikar’s career was marked by groundbreaking research, particularly in the field of cosmology. He is best known for the Hoyle–Narlikar theory of gravity, which provided an alternative to the Big Bang theory and opened new avenues in the study of the universe’s origins.
Hoyle–Narlikar Theory: Developed with Fred Hoyle, this theory challenged conventional cosmological models and remains a significant contribution to theoretical physics.
Founding IUCAA: In 1988, Narlikar established the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune, which has since become a leading institution for astronomical research and education in India.
Popular Science Writing: Narlikar was a prolific writer and communicator, authoring numerous books and articles in English and Marathi to make science accessible to the public.
Awards and Honors: He received the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, and several international accolades for his contributions to science.
Following the news of his passing, tributes have poured in from scientists, students, and leaders across the globe. The IUCAA, where he served as founding director, led the condolences, describing him as a visionary who inspired generations of astronomers.
Dr. Narlikar’s colleagues remember him as a passionate educator, a humble mentor, and a relentless seeker of knowledge. His ability to explain complex scientific ideas in simple language made him a beloved figure among students and science enthusiasts.
Dr. Narlikar is survived by his wife, Dr. Mangala Narlikar, a mathematician, and their daughters. The family has requested privacy as they mourn the loss of a beloved husband and father.
A memorial service will be held at IUCAA in Pune, where colleagues, students, and admirers will gather to pay their respects and celebrate the life of a true giant in Indian science.
