Pune: Farmers from Warulwadi in Junnar taluka, known for export-quality grapes, have now ventured into cultivating export-grade bananas, creating a new avenue for sustainable income.
Progressive farmer Rutuparna Meher has set a milestone by dispatching the first air-conditioned container of export-grade bananas to Iraq. The shipment was facilitated by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Narayangaon, Deccan Valley Farmers Producer Company, and Sahyadri Farmers Producer Company.
The ceremonial flag-off event was held at KVK Narayangaon, where the container was blessed and dispatched by banana producers Monika Meher, Rama Meher, and Rutuparna Meher in the presence of MLA Sharad Sonawane and KVK President Anil Meher. Other dignitaries, including representatives of Deccan Valley Farmers Producer Company and Sahyadri Farms, also attended.
The 15-ton shipment, comprising 1,540 boxes of bananas, will travel to Iraq via Mumbai's Nhava Sheva Port and is expected to reach its destination within eight days. Gulf nations’ consistent demand for bananas offers local farmers a lucrative opportunity.
Speaking on the occasion, KVK President Anil Meher said, “Farmers in Junnar and Ambegaon talukas are being guided to adopt export-quality banana cultivation through KVK's support. Efforts are also underway to explore the export potential of other crops like okra in the near future.”
Progressive farmer Rutuparna Meher, who spearheaded this initiative, shared insights into the process. On February 1, 2024, Meher planted G-9 banana saplings across five acres using an 8x5-foot planting pattern.
With an investment of ₹1.35 lakh per acre, covering saplings, drip irrigation, and fertilizers, the first harvest was ready in January 2025. From one acre, Meher harvested approximately 34 tons of bananas, of which 28 tons were export-grade, fetching ₹16 per kilogram. Through exports, Meher anticipates earning ₹4.5 lakh per acre.
Deccan Valley Farmers Producer Company has initiated banana cluster projects in Junnar, Ambegaon, Shirur, and Khed talukas. The company has already exported 14 containers of bananas to Gulf countries.
However, recent cold weather has led to chilling-related issues, slightly reducing market rates to ₹15-20 per kilogram. Despite this, farmers continue to achieve average yields of 20-25 tons per acre.
