Pune: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has proposed an ambitious underground twin-tunnel project from Katraj to Yerawada, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity between the southern and northern parts of Pune. The estimated cost for this 20-kilometer tunnel is ₹8,000 crore, with a per-kilometer cost of ₹400 crore.

During a high-level meeting in Mumbai, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the PMRDA’s annual budget of ₹4,503 crore was approved. As part of the discussions, PMRDA proposed the construction of this tunnel, which CM Fadnavis approved. He also instructed officials to develop a detailed project plan, incorporate a twin-tunnel design, and utilize advanced construction technology.

When asked about the project, Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale confirmed that the tunnel will be a major north-south transportation link. PMRDA has taken the responsibility for its execution, and the detailed project report (DPR) is currently under development. The ambitious project aims to reduce traffic congestion in Pune and provide an alternative to existing busy routes.

Questions Raised Over Delayed Katraj-Kondhwa Road Expansion

While the PMRDA’s tunnel project has gained momentum, concerns have been raised about the long-pending Katraj-Kondhwa road expansion project.

The 3-kilometer-long and 84-meter-wide Katraj-Kondhwa road expansion has faced numerous delays due to land acquisition issues. Despite the project being initiated seven years ago, only 40% of the work has been completed.

With the PMRDA moving forward with a massive 20-kilometer tunnel project, the question arises—will the Katraj-Kondhwa road finally be completed, or will it remain stuck in bureaucratic hurdles?
