Pune, 1st September 2025: The Union Ministry of Environment has approved the Khadakwasla–Fursungi underground canal project, a ₹2,200 crore scheme aimed at improving irrigation in rural areas and addressing water pollution issues in Pune.
The 28-kilometer canal will run underground from Khadakwasla Dam to Fursungi, conserving nearly 3 TMC of water by cutting losses seen in open canals. Authorities expect the project to bring more farmland in Daund taluka under irrigation, giving farmers a reliable seasonal water supply and improving crop productivity.
A review meeting was held at Rahu (Daund taluka) with MLA Rahul Kul, Executive Engineer Yogesh Sawant, and officials from Mega Engineers. Kul urged officials to maintain strict timelines and coordination to ensure smooth implementation.
Along with boosting agriculture, the project is also designed to benefit Pune city. By reducing leakage and controlling water discharge, it will help lower water pollution levels. Officials believe the dual benefits, supporting farmers and improving Pune’s urban water management, make this a significant step forward in the region’s development.
