Maharashtra Govt to Boost MSRTC Security: IPS Officer Appointment, More CCTV and Patrolling

Pune: In response to the recent sexual assault incident at Swargate Bus Depot, the Maharashtra government has decided to appoint an IPS-ranked officer to strengthen the security of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). This move aims to enhance passenger safety and prevent future incidents.

Minister of State for Transport Madhuri Misal visited Swargate Bus Depot on Saturday (March 1) and conducted a comprehensive security review. During her visit, she emphasized the need for immediate security enhancements at one of Pune’s busiest transport hubs.

During her meeting with ST and police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Police Amol Zende, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ashwini Rakh, ST Regional Manager Anagha Bartakke, and Divisional Controller Pramod Nehul, Minister Misal outlined several key security reforms, including:

Appointment of an IPS-Ranked Officer: The security department of the ST Corporation will now be headed by an IPS officer to ensure better law enforcement and passenger protection.

Increased Police Patrolling: Law enforcement presence will be significantly enhanced at Swargate and other major bus stations.

Expansion of CCTV Surveillance: More CCTV cameras will be installed at Swargate Bus Station to improve 24/7 monitoring and deter criminal activities.

Strict Action Against Negligence: An audit of the Swargate bus station will be conducted. If any official or contractor is found responsible for security lapses, strict disciplinary action will be taken.

Dedicated Passenger Complaint System: A complaint resolution center will be set up at Swargate, and a statewide toll-free number will be introduced for passengers to report security concerns.

Minister Madhuri Misal reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against passengers. “Passenger safety is our top priority. We are implementing stronger security protocols to ensure that such incidents are not repeated,” she said.
