A feather in the cap: Maharashtra ranks first in survey tracking criminal justice system

Though Maharashtra scored fewer points as compared to last year (5.92 out of 10), it retained the top spot ahead of Tamil Nadu and Telangana

Mumbai: After bagging the second spot in Innovation Index of India, Maharashtra is now ranked first in the country for the second time consecutively in a survey named India Justice Report. Maharashtra scored 5.77 points out of 10 in a report which tracks the criminal justice system via judiciary, legal aid, police and prison.

Though the state scored fewer points as compared to last year (5.92 out of 10), it retained the top spot ahead of Tamil Nadu and Telangana.

The second edition of the India Justice Report by Tata Trusts, collected in collaboration with civil society organisations to measure the capacity of several states to deliver justice, was launched on Thursday. The report uses data compiled by states to rank 18 big and mid-sized states and seven small states. It compares their performance according to factors around what it calls the four pillars of the justice delivery system: judiciary, police, prisons and legal aid.

The report along with quantitative measurement of budgets, diversity in gender and infrastructure and other 87 indicators are used t to rank a state against other states.

While Maharashtra remains first in the place, Uttar Pradesh ranks the last among large and mid-sized states. Ranking of Punjab and Uttarakhand, did not changed as they remained on same position as before on 4th and 15th, respectively.

Telangana and Jharkhand which are third and eighth respectively, have shown a connected rise of eight spots each. Meanwhile, Karnataka has gone down by eight positions while and Madhya Pradesh also reported decline by seven places.

Recently, Maharashtra secured the second spot in India Innovation Index 2020 that was released by the NITI Aayog. Maharashtra sits second after Karnataka and is currently led by Maha Vikas Aghadi under the leadership of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
