Demand for electricity in Maharashtra increased by about 2000 MW: Energy Minister Dr Nitin Raut

Pune: "The demand for the electricity during Ganeshotsav was between 14,000 and 16,000 MW, but now the rains have receded across Maharashtra and daily transactions have resumed smoothly due to the easing of restrictions post lockdown 4.0. As a result, the demand for electricity has increased by about 2000 MW," said Energy Minister Nitin Raut.

As the demand for the electricity increases, power generation has started from Mahanirmiti's Parli power station, set number eight with a capacity of 250 MW and Bhusawal power station, set number four and five with a capacity of 500 MW each.

Dr Raut has instructed the officials of the three power companies to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the power consumers in the state, by equipping the power generating kits and making efficient use of skilled manpower by enabling technical machinery. He said that MSEDCL was facing a tough challenge to restore the power supply in the flood-hit areas across the state and work had been undertaken on the battlefield.

After the central government issued new rules regarding Unlock-1.0, the Maharashtra state government decided to relax the restrictions under "Mission Begin Again" and now most of the government and semi-government offices have started functioning.

The Hotels, restaurants have been allowed, shops, merchant establishments have increased their work timings, the wheels of industry are also gaining momentum. Overall, the slowdown in social life due to COVID-19 and lockdown is now slowly returning to normal, which has seen an increase in demand for electricity.
